Prepare for Surgery, Heal Faster: Session I

Discover five simple actions you can take before surgery to reduce anxiety, decrease pain and shorten post-surgery recovery time. Leyza will guide you in the mind-body techniques shown to enhance the healing process, developed by Peggy Huddleston. Take an active role in and enhance your healing as you prepare for, and go through, any type of minor or major surgery. These easy to learn, mind-body techniques will help you feel calmer before surgery, use less pain medication, and recover faster. This evidence-based approach to preparing for surgery is offered at a number of hospitals in the U.S., including two in Maine. Leyza trained with Peggy Huddleston and will guide you in mind-body techniques. While not necessary for the workshop, prior to surgery, you will need to get Ms. Huddleston’s relaxation CD set or MP3 (not required for class). This, as well as the Prepare for Surgery, Heal Faster book or e-book (recommended reading), can be purchased at www.HealFaster.com. Ms. Huddleston's book and CD set are also available at a few local libraries. No discounts.

Chair Yoga Session II

Chair yoga provides an adaptive and accessible way for individuals who experience challenges with strength, balance, and mobility. This class is for all abilities and integrates the chair into the poses making modifications for each level of ability. There will be an emphasis on mindful breathing, dynamic movements, stretching and strengthening muscles, and exploring ranges of motions creating a full mind-body experience. Each class will conclude with a peaceful relaxation/meditation session. We will begin with in-chair only and adapt our class based on the needs of the participants. Class meets on Zoom.

9 Phases of Chi which is a powerful approach to strengthening your body while enhancing your nervous system, releasing unhealthy thought patterns and emotional blockages, and discovering the true essence of your spirit. Experience the pure joy and freedom of stress relief, increased energy and vitality, inner peace, and pain relief. The 9 Phases of Chi can be practiced while sitting or standing. Please wear loose comfortable clothing and bring some water to drink. This class is a hybrid class, we will welcome 7 students to practice in person in Room 3 at Merrymeeting in Topsham and will broadcast the class to those practicing from home using Cisco WebEx.

Students attending from home must have an audio and video enabled computer, tablet, or smartphone to participate. Students attending in person must follow Covid-19 Protocols.

Have you always wanted to learn about Herbal Medicine? If so, this class will cover the basics. We will look at the energetics of herbs, our individual constitution, and then discuss common herbs that are great for stress, anxiety digestion, and more! Katie Munn is a certified clinical herbalist and nutritionist who offers herbal consultations and classes in the greater Portland area. She is an instructor at the University of Southern Maine teaching Botanical Therapies, where she is also at work on an MSW graduate program. The class takes place on Zoom.  No discounts.

Session II Yoga for Men

The benefits of yoga for men and women are similar: more flexibility, strength, and stress relief. But men are built differently and lose flexibility faster. The practice in this class recognizes men’s upper-body strength and promotes elasticity in tight areas for men like the shoulders, hips, and back. Bring a mat and dress in loose clothing. No class on April 21. Class meets on Zoom.
